Have you ever watched the movie Aladdin?

Did you know that there are rumours that there are hidden subliminal messages in this movie?

So much so that Disney changed the words in the scene that allegedly held the subliminal message before they released the DVD.

Same with the Lion King.

The dust that's flying in the sky when Simba flops down was alleged to display the word "sex". The animators countered that it actually spelt out "sfx", which is movie speak for special effects. Either way, this raised some controversy about it being a hidden subliminal message in this Disney film and it was changed for recent DVD releases.

The American Life League has regularly accused Disney of incorporating subliminal messages into various movies. They suggest that these are often sexual in nature.

You could argue that you need a particularly active kind of mind to accuse a simple cartoon of containing that kind of message. Surely no-one with a conscience would want to corrupt the nation's youth? Especially not when they are watching the movie with their parents. After all, your parents would be much more likely to notice that kind of message than an innocent child.

But the rumours continue.

With the size and scale of a cartoon production, it's likely that no-one can say for certain whether or not a particular movie has absolutely no subliminal messages held in it.

You'd need to examine the immense amount of detail that goes into our modern movies.

Pictures are only one component. There's the soundtrack as well. You could bury something in that quite easily and once it was mixed down it would be near enough impossible to determine whether there was a subliminal message hidden in it.

Ultimately, it's your choice. Join the conspiracy theorists and argue that there are hidden subliminals in Disney movies. Or just sit back and enjoy the film!
