All this may not have been possible had it not been for the invention of the desktop personal computer. The desktop personal computer or the desktop PC as it is commonly called has made it possible for individuals to take advantage of the amazing computing skills and other abilities of the computer, while at home or the office.

The Early Computers

Computers have become so commonplace and so varied in form that it becomes difficult to explain what exactly a computer is. Nevertheless one can try to define the computer as a machine that is a data processing system which uses the data inputs as per the commands received by it. This simple definition refers to the most basic function of a computer.

The initial computers were very large and required special rooms to fit them in. Their power consumption was also exorbitant. The early computers required as much power that is the equivalent of power used by several hundred modern day computers.

Modern Computers

Computers of the day, on the other hand, are much smaller in size. Not only are the present day computers small, they also consume substantially lesser amount of power. As if this was not sufficient, the modern day computers are many times more capable of computing at a fast rate as compared to their predecessors.

Today’s personal computers have become the hallmark of the information and technology age. The desktop personal computers have made computer literates of millions of individuals who would have, otherwise, been denied access to this technology.

Personal Computer

Desktop Pc’s have become immensely popular as they give all the advantages of a computer at a fraction of the cost of their predecessors. Mass production has brought down the cost of the desktop personal computers.

Their immense computing abilities have been another factor in their growing popularity. Computers can handle such a vast amount of data that an entire roomful of papers might not be equal to the storage capacity of one good sized desktop PC.

Functioning

The functioning of a desktop PC is not very difficult to comprehend. It is made of several different modules. The best point is that one can easily rearrange and replace any one or more of these modules. Besides this these modules can also be interchanged or if required then combined with each other. This translates into the fact that someone with a mere rudimentary knowledge of computer hardware can easily modify a desktop personal computer.

There are some basic components that are common to all desktop personal computers. These are:

• The Computer Casing: This casing holds all the other components of the computer within it. This saves the components from dust and other elements.

• The Motherboard: This is the board for all the primary circuits. Its most important function is to enable electrical connections amongst other components of the computer.

• Processor: This is the central processing unit of the computer and this is what translates the commands given to the computer into processed data.

• Memory Card: This is that part of the computer that keeps all the digital information in it. It is also called computer data storage.

• Mass Storage: This refers to the hard disk drives of the computers.

• Keyboard: This is the component on which the instructions to the computer are typed out.

• Mouse: A mouse is that device which is used to point out and select characters on the monitor screen, besides other similar functions.

• Monitor: This is like a television monitor. It displays the various images which are generated by the computer.

Everything inside the computer casing is connected via the motherboard. Both the memory card as well as the processor is mounted on to the motherboard. Even the hard disk drives are connected to the motherboard through cables. The two components that are outside the casing are the keyboard and the mouse. These are connected to the system via independent cables.

Data can be transferred from one desktop personal computer to another by using external hard disk drives or other technological devices such as the flash drive. In today’s date even the internet can be used to transfer data from one desktop personal computer to another.
