Make Design Easy: Putting Fun in Kitchen, Bath Remodeling
(ARA) - When
starting on a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, finding
inspiration, good ideas and quality products can sometimes be a
daunting challenge. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the process.
But when you take a step back, small changes like adding new towel
rings or a little paint can change the whole character of a
room.
"Whenever you are about to begin any project within your home,
whether large or small, it's so important to get yourself organized
and do your research well before the contractor shows up," says
Leslie Segrete, host of TLC's "While Your Were Out." "Keep lists
and timelines well organized, and if you are hiring a contractor,
go over in detail within their contract their responsibilities and
yours so there is no confusion when you get into the thick of it.
Sometimes being prepared for the worst can make an experience that
you feared might be unsettling into a well oiled machine."
Embarking on your own DIY project? Here are a few tips from real
homeowners who shared their experiences last year during Moen
Incorporated's kitchen and bathroom remodeling contest Show Us Your
Style:
* Start with the small, simple things and save for the bigger and
tougher items if you can. I started by removing the wallpaper and
painting. Next was the cabinet hardware and lighting. Finally, I
did the big stuff after I'd saved enough money (floors and new
patio door). It all came together perfectly in the end and I didn't
kill my wallet. -- Shawn C., Tacoma, Wash.
* If you are doing more than one project at a time and/or working
with several contractors, be prepared for things to go wrong on
occasion. Also, if you are not on-site while work is being done,
try to visit as often as you can and stay in close communication
with the contractors to minimize misunderstandings and
conflicts.
-- Rachel K., Oak Hill, Ill.
* Get family and friends to help with the demolition. That saved us
money right off the bat. We hired professionals for the rest of the
work. Also, ask the contractor for his or her input as you proceed.
We got some really good ideas that we wouldn't have thought of
without the extra help. -- Amelia H., Cape Coral, Fla.
* Months before starting any project, start collecting pictures
from magazines that catch your eye. Ultimately, there will be a
common interest in all of the photos and your design will be born
from that. Trust your instincts since you will be the one living in
the space. You should love what you make of it. -- Susan S.,
Frederick, Md.
