How can I watch TV on the web? by Jane

It depends on what you mean by watching TV on the web. As you're
most probably aware, you can download episodes via peer to peer or
bittorrent. This is on very shaky legal ground, and doesn't give
you live programming. If you just want to watch TV, and not
download it, there are better alternatives than torrenting.
You can watch TV on the web via a client, which streams the station
to your computer. You need a client to do this as you do most of
these types of things. If you were using bittorrent, you can't do
that without a client, either. What Tv clients give you the ability
to do is watch the programming without downloading the episodes to
your computer. In fact, you can stream hundreds of channels, from
all over the world, to your computer.
You find a lot of these free clients by just plugging the right
keywords into Google. What you won't know, until you run the
executable file, is if you've managed to get one that's free of
malware and viruses. It's playing a game of chance with your
computer. Most people aren't willing to take that risk. There are
other clients that charge a small one off fee, and you're better
off buying one of those to make the process risk free.
So how do you do it?
- Download the client and install it,
- Download any codecs required (these are the translators that let
you run video and audio outputs in programs such as Mediaplayer,
Real Player and Quicktime)
- Launch program, and off you go.
Cable TV programs can now be streamed directly to your
computer.
If you want to watch TV on the web it can be done easily and
cheaply without filling up your hard drive or bittorrenting. You
just need to look for the right tool.
