Choosing your domain name is very important for your business. Many
entrepreneurs do not realize the long-standing importance of a
domain name. Your domain name will affect many parts of your
business and should be carefully considered. Consider carefully
what domain name you will use. It should be one that anyone can
completely identify with the business you are carrying on. It isn't
easy to change once you purchase one, so think carefully. It has
two main purposes.
· Brand your business
· Helps to achieve search engine optimization
Brand your business: To choose your domain name, you must recognize
that this will be how customers see your business and thus the name
must be a good one and very professional. Below are points to
remember when choosing your domain name:
· Make it memorable: Make sure that people can remember it
easily. This means that your visitors will be better able to return
to your website and also let others know about it.
· Make it short and easy to spell: The shorter and least
complicated it is the better. They will be able to spell it easier
and remember it into the future.
· It should describe your business and what you do. Your
domain name should describe what you are offering your prospects
and customers, so when they see it, they know what they are
getting.
· Your domain name is your business name: because of this fact
it is extremely hard to change so it is critical for your business
to get this right the 1st time.
Optimizing your website: Try to include your keyword or key phrase
within your domain name. This helps position you better in the
search engines and make your website easy to find.
Registering your domain name:
· Make a list of domain names: Get a list of five or even ten
different names to use for your domain name. You'll find that some
of your ideas are already taken, so you should have a number of
choices with your keywords in use.
· Go to a domain register website to register your domain
name. Look for .Com at first but if this cannot be found .Net or.
Org can also be used. Now there are a couple of terms that you will
find here that will need to be defined: o Nameserver: This is your
host's server. Inserting the host's DNS or server code will assure
that your domain name will be found for the purpose of
registration. Your website will then be published to the web for
the entire world to see. o Whois is contact info on your website.
This is available to the public unless you wish to make it private.
When making it public, everyone can access it, so don't put too
much personal information.
Some important things to remember:
o You will find an option for registering your domain name for 1-5
years. Try to register for 2 or even 5 years, if you can, as this
will make your business more credible in Google's eyes and you will
attain a better Page Rank.
o It is best to lock your domain name so that nobody can transfer
it to another service or otherwise tamper with it.
