Okay so you have seen and read enough science fiction to have heard the term wormhole or black hole, and you feel kind of odd asking someone if it actually exists, don't worry a lot of us do. The reason is because so far no one has ever provided concrete evidence as to what a wormhole can do, in fact for a long time there was speculation as to whether or not a worm hole existed. So then does a wormhole exist? And why is a wormhole called a wormhole? If you have always wanted to know and though it was too stupid to ask here are the facts.

First things first wormholes are pure theory, there is no physical evidence yet, that can support the existence of a wormhole, the closest thing to a wormhole and also the phenomenon that has given birth to the wormhole is the black hole. A black hole is a celestial body that has such a powerful gravitational field, that nothing can pass through it not even light. So if you were to stand and flash a torch light at a black hole, you would see the light disappear and see nothing, complete emptiness. Sounds spooky? Its not, the only reason we know a black hole exists is because the gas surrounding a black hole gets sucked in by the gravitation and starts emitting x-rays and other radiation, radiation we can detect. Essentially the only physical basis of a wormhole is a black hole.

Famous scientists like Einstein have worked on postulating wormholes, but there is still no physical proof till date, that can point to the existence of a wormhole. So then what's the big deal? Well to put it simply, as far as scientists are concerned, wormholes could be gateways, gateways that allow travel from one point in space to another at incredibly fast speeds. If you are wondering why a wormhole is called a wormhole; imagine an apple, and an insect wants to get from one end of the apple to the other, what would be shortest way from A to B? Simple a straight line, but that would mean the worm would have to make a hole and go through the apple, that's exactly what's scientists believe wormholes could do and that is why they are called wormholes.

Scientists believe a wormhole could make travel between galaxies (in fact travel between two times) possible. You could go down a wormhole in 2007 and come out the other side in 47 BC or 4007, and it is this possibility that has spawned so many science fiction movies, and popular myths. But the truth is no one really knows if its even possible to survive a wormhole (or if one even exists). However all said and done wormholes are a fascinating prospect, and that is why there is a frantic search to find one. But till the time a wormhole is found, I guess the best we have is speculating scientists, science fiction movies, and our own limitless imagination.
