Freediving used competitively by holding breath to attain the
greatest depths, distances and overall time is also referred to as
freediving apnea. Due to the serious nature of freediving, adequate
training, freediving manuals and proper gear and wetsuit is
required for competitive and leisure freediving.
Withholding breath while underwater and descending to greater
depths makes certain demands on the body. Understanding the demands
placed on your body in response to high pressure and lack of air
will help a diver achieve their goals safely. Here are a few
physiological demands that must be achieved safely with each
freediving adventure.
* Pulse rate will drop
* Blood vessels will shrink resulting in blood flowing from the
limbs to the heart, main arteries and brain.
* Blood plasma will shift to the blood vessels of the lungs
reducing the likelihood of lung damage.
With proper training the above physiological demands can be met
without sacrificing safety when freediving.
Training for freediving requires training your muscles for
anaerobic conditions and to increase your overall tolerance for CO2
buildup. An example of anaerobic training on land is referred to as
the apnea walk. The apnea walk requires the trainee to take 2 to 3
slow preparatory breaths before holding their breath for 1 minute
and walking as far as they can before taking their first breath.
This teaches the trainee the distance they achieved as well as the
necessity of prepping their body with slow deep breaths before the
breath holding. For adequate instruction refer to freediving
manuals.
CAUTION: If not trained properly, hyperventilation can initiate
shallow and deep water blackout and ultimately result in drowning.
Like any sport that involves risk, freediving must be learned and
practiced consistently to achieve competency with aquatic
sports.
