Dropshot Fishing by Rogan Mocke

Dropshot fishing is a great sport for anglers of all ages and can be used to target many species of fish.

Tackle :
The standard dropshot kit consists of a 7 foot rod, which is a medium action. The reel size, depending on the make, is either a 30 or 2500 model. The preferred line to use would be a super braided line such as berkley fireline, about 8lb. You then need a leader to attach to the braided line. A flourocarbon 12 - 17lb should do the trick. Your choice of jighead will differ according to the species of fish you are targeting.

Bait :
The bait you use is very important when it comes to targeting species. You will want to make sure that you select the right bait for the job. For example : If you find yourself targeting the GT ( Giant Trevely ), You will need a bait that simulates this fishes natural food. The 5" Pearl watermelon power bait by Berkley would be a good choice. There are many different types of baits on the market to target all sorts of fish.

Retrieve :
This is a very important part of dropshot fishing as this will deside if you get the bites or not. For a more preditory fish, you will want to use a fast erratic reteive to draw the fishes attention. Make your bait look like a strugling bait fish and you will get the bite every time.
