Confidence: Often The Difference Between Winning And Losing

Tiger Woods is considered the best golfer in the world. He has held
this title for a number of years. His accomplishments on the golf
course only reinforce the dominance over the best players in the
world. There is nobody who is even close to the number of victories
that he amassed over the last decade. However, what is it that
makes him so much better? Is his golf game really that much
superior to everyone else?
The amazing part of this whole scenario is that the physical part
of Tiger Woods' golf game is closer to the competition that the
numbers dictate. He is know for hitting the ball a long way. Yet
others on the Tour hit is further. He has a very good short game.
However, it is not the best. Also, he has remarkable consistency
from one week to the next. Of course, a different person from the
field can step up weekly and play exceptional. Thus, what creates
the huge gap in performance.
The major difference is the confidence that he enters the
tournament with. Tiger enters every venue with the expectation that
he is going to win. The other players may claim to do this but do
they really believe it deep down. The majority of them do not.
Tiger has the vast percentage of the players beaten before they
even tee off. His confidence is overpowering to many of them.
In horse racing, the winning horse needs only to win by a nose. Of
course, the difference in prize money between first and second
place is substantial. Winning the race often pays double that of
second place. This is interesting since the winner is not twice as
good as the one who finished second. In some instances, it is only
marginally better than its' competitor. Yet the difference in a
nose pays off hugely.
Our lives are similar. For us to be successful, we do not have to
be twice as good as someone else. We really only need to be
marginally better. For example, in sales, the person who gets the
deals usually is only a little better than the other salespeople
competing for the business. In terms of skill, the difference
between a high income earner and a moderate producer is not that
great. Typically, it is the confidence the top producer displays
that wins the “close ones”.
Confidence is tied to one's expectations. As mentioned, Tiger
enters every tournament with the expectation of winning. His skills
are marginally better on any given weekend. However, his confidence
is drastically superior when compared to the rest. This is evident
when he is in contention on the last day of the event. Everyone in
the field is concerned where he is. Over the years, many of the
players who played along side of him on the last day crumbled under
the pressure. Tiger's confidence psychologically beat them.
Sales trainers teach new people to go into sales situations
expecting to get the sale. If one does this in a confident manner,
that is transferred to the prospect. By the same token, a lack of
confidence will also be evident. In those situations where all
other factors are equal, this will be a difference maker.
Confidence is the nose that the winner gets across the line.
Pay attention to those times that you go through life showing a
lack of confidence. Of course, we are not talking about putting up
a facade. However, realize that you have many talents and
capabilities. You are worthy of all that this world has to offer.
The experiences you endured over the years fully prepared you for
this moment. It is your right to walk forward confidently knowing
that you have a lot to offer. Do this and you will find yourself
winning more than losing.
The world loves to interact with people who are confident.
Naturally, we are not talking about cockiness. Cockiness is
actually a sign of low confidence. Someone who is truly confident
in their abilities and the person that they are will attract the
best people. With the world in such an unsettled state, anyone who
exhibits a calm confidence through it all will garner the attention
of others. Move ahead with confidence to accept the rewards that
are available to you. All your endeavors will become more
successful.
